Mandrake Linux 8.2 Boxed-Sets Now Available

22 April 2002

Mandrake Linux starts shipping boxed-for-sale copies of its latest offering, the Mandrake Linux 8.2 operating system (OS) distribution today. Along with Caldera, Red Hat, and SuSE, Mandrake is one of the four leading Linux OS distributions.

Mandrake Linux released the Mandrake Linux 8.2 distribution for downloading on 18 March 2002. (Download links below.)

Mandrake Linux 8.2 includes the new Linux 2.4.18 kernel. The previous version, Mandrake Linux 8.1, which was released in September 2001, included the new Linux 2.4.8 kernel

According to Mandrake Press Releases and other Mandrake information, Mandrake Linux 8.2 includes both the GNOME 1.4.1 and KDE (K Desktop Environment) 2.2.2 windows-like desktops.

The new KDE 2.2.2 desktop features an improved Konqueror browser and file manager. And for you Mozilla fans, Mandrake Linux 8.2 ships with Mozilla 0.9.8.

Mandrake 8.2 also includes Ximian's Evolution 1.02 -- a desktop, Outlook-like, e-mail client and personal information manager. Sun's new StarOffice 6.0 desktop office productivity suite is included with the Mandrake 8.2 ProSuite and PowerPack Editions.

A major advantage the Microsoft Windows desktop environment has enjoyed over the Linux desktop environment has been the Microsoft Office Suite, which includes Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, and several other bundled applications. The inclusion in Mandrake 8.2 of Ximian Evolution, the StarOffice 6.0 office suite, the new KOffice 1.1.1 office suite, and AbiWord substantially reduces that gap -- perhaps it might pretty much erase that gap for many computer users.

Mandrake 8.2 comes in three, boxed, flavors:

  • Mandrake Linux Standard Edition - three CDs - $40 -- up from $30 in Mandrake 8.1.
  • Mandrake Linux PowerPack Edition - seven CDs - $70
  • Mandrake Linux ProSuite Edition - eight CDs including two special Mandrake Server CDs plus a DVD with lots of Linux applications and server configuration wizards - $150.

At $70 for a seven-CD Linux distribution boxed-set including the now for-sale StarOffice 6.0, the Mandrake Linux 8.2 PowerPack edition seems like a bargain with lots of bang for your bucks.

In addition, there is an OEM version for pre-installation that is scheduled to be available later this month.

We have not checked Mandrake Linux 8.2 yet. However, here are excerpts of a Mandrake Press Release announcing the availability of Mandrake Linux 8.2 boxed-sets for retails sales.

Please also see our previous Mandrake 8.2 article, Mandrake Linux 8.2 Released for Downloading, for more and additional information about what's in Mandrake Linux 8.2.

MandrakeSoft Announces the Immediate Availability of Mandrake Linux 8.2Retail Packs.

Altadena, CA - April 22, 2002 - MandrakeSoft (, aleading provider of Open Source software, today announced the availability of the boxed versions of Mandrake Linux 8.2 through a number of retail outlets worldwide and also online from The latest release of MandrakeSoft's popular operating system marks a new step in addressing the special needs of enterprise users while continuing to ease the adoption of Linux by all. Depending on the user's requirements, Mandrake Linux 8.2 can be installed as a full-featured & powerful Linux server, or as a highlyproductive personal workstation.

"Mandrake Linux has long been the preferred Linux distribution for individuals, but Mandrake Linux 8.2 marks a new step in our penetration of the corporate environment. The features and unparalleled ease of use make8.2 an incredibly efficient and affordable alternative to UNIX and Windows2000" said Jacques Le Marois, CEO of MandrakeSoft.

New server features include the ability to use an encrypted filesystem for protecting sensitive data; "kernel-secure" adds important security featuresto the default Linux kernel; and an "Enterprise" kernel delivers SMP(Symmetric Multi Processing) and Hi-memory support (above 1024 MB) forhigh-end servers. Mandrake Linux 8.2 also introduces a quick and efficient way to set up printers and scanners; a new file sharing feature for easily sharing files and directories in a networked environment; and improved"hot-plug" support that lets users install new devices quickly and painlessly without having to reboot the system. A new remote desktop utility, RFBdrake, is extremely useful for controlling machines remotely within a LAN or securely through the Internet (works with Linux/Unix systems and with Windows 2000/XP "Window Terminal Services"). The reworked versionof MSEC, a system for configuring the security level of a machine (Standard,High, Highest, Paranoid) is more powerful than ever.

New desktop features include a completely redesigned Mandrake Control Center that serves as a central location for MandrakeSoft-specific tools and utilities, as well as many new configuration wizards. Desktop users will appreciate the task-oriented menus in GNOME and KDE, which greatly simplify locating applications by categorizing them into common "tasks". MandrakeFirstTime is an easy-to-use wizard that helps setup a desktop environment (KDE, GNOME, etc.), choose a theme and configure email settings.

DrakNet, the Internet connection and network utility, efficiently helps users configure all types of network connections, from common dial-up modems to DSL and cable connections. Also included are the latest stable versions of KDE and GNOME which both offer some great new features and applications such as anti-aliased fonts and Evolution (an Outlook-like email client and personal information manager). . . .
